The Great Green Wall is an African Union project adopted in 2007. The original plan measured 7,775 km long.

Richard St. Barbe Baker proposed a tree buffer after his 40,000-kilometre expedition. The idea re-emerged in 2002.

The concept evolved beyond planting trees into promoting water harvesting and greenery protection. It also improved indigenous land use techniques.

By 2030, the ongoing goal is to restore 100 million hectares and create 10 million jobs.

In January 2021, partners pledged USD 14.3 billion for the Accelerator. As of March 2023, $2.5 billion disbursed.

Tree Aid partnered to grow more than 589,000 trees in Mali and Senegal. The team selected 55 indigenous species.

Trees were planned to stretch across the Sahel.

As of 2024, about 30 million hectares had been restored, completing 30% of the target. Locusts damaged projects.
