The Game Boy is a handheld console released in Japan on April 21, 1989. Nintendo Research and Development 1 designed it.

Gunpei Yokoi championed mature technology. Satoru Okada pushed for interchangeable ROM cartridges instead of a simple toy.

They offered Nintendo a monochrome screen for ¥1,300 or a color version for ¥3,900. Color cost triple the monochrome price.

The Game Boy uses a custom hybrid processor.

President Hiroshi Yamauchi canceled the project in summer 1988 over poor display visibility. R&D1 secured a super-twisted nematic prototype and installed it.

The final retail price was twelve thousand five hundred yen. Yamauchi included headphones and four AA batteries to enhance perceived value.

In North America, Tetris was bundled instead of Super Mario Land. Henk Rogers argued Tetris would appeal to everyone. Falling blocks lack bias.

The Game Boy and Game Boy Color sold an estimated 118.69 million combined units. They remain fourth-bestselling as of 2025.
