Boudhanath sits on an ancient trade route from Tibet to India. Tibetan merchants have rested and prayed here for centuries.
Tibetan refugees settled around Boudhanath. Over 50 gompas and monasteries were constructed nearby.
The 25 April 2015 Nepal earthquake badly damaged Boudhanath, severely cracking the spire. The whole structure above the dome required examination.
Reconstruction began on 22 November 2015 with a ritual life-tree insertion. Consecrated relics including copper and gold were placed within.
Boudha Stupa became a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Repairs cost 2.1 million dollars and more than 30 kg of gold. Private donations funded the entire reconstruction effort.
Boudhanath reopened on 22 November 2016. The site remains one of the most visited pilgrimage locations for devout Buddhists.
