In 1838 King Ferdinand acquired the ruins and surrounding lands. Construction took place between 1842 and 1854.
Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege designed the rebuild. Romanticism apparently requires a hard hat.
A vast forested area surrounds the Romanticist palace.
The restored convent section includes a dining room and cloister. A clock tower was completed in 1843.
Interiors were adapted as a summer residence. Painted walls in trompe-l'œil and stuccos form royal collections.
Over time the red and yellow façades faded to gray. Gray was never really the plan.
