The Badshahi Mosque is a Mughal-era imperial mosque located in Lahore. Aurangzeb commissioned the structure in 1671.
Construction was overseen by Fidai Khan Koka. Builders completed the mosque in 1673 using red sandstone and white marble inlay.
Aurangzeb based the plan on Delhi's Jama Masjid. The Badshahi Mosque was built on a much larger scale.
Badshahi Mosque has small rooms built into its courtyard walls.
The sandstone-paved courtyard covers 25,600 square metres. Visitors enter through a two-storey gateway ascended by 22 steps.
Four octagonal minarets stand at the corners. Each minaret is 60 metres tall and topped by a marble canopy.
Extensive repairs began in 1939. Restoration was completed in 1960 at a cost of 4.8 million Rupees.
In 2008, replacement work on the red sandstone tiles began. New tiles came from the original Mughal source near Jaipur.
