Ernő Rubik invented the Rubik's Cube on May 19, 1974. The first world championship happened in Budapest in 1982.

A Chinese solver set this Rubik's Cube record.

Nineteen people competed in that event. Minh Thai won with a single solve time of 22.95 seconds.

Popularity waned after 1983 until online websites brought new cubers together. Enthusiasts organized a championship in Toronto in 2003.

The World Cube Association was founded in 2004. There were 12 competitions that year, over 1150 in 2018.

Speedcubers use methods like CFOP, Roux, and ZZ to reduce times.

Official competitions are held in more than 100 countries. Dozens of manufacturers now make speedcubes.
