The Bornean orangutan is a great ape endemic to Borneo. Carl Linnaeus described it in 1799.

This animal belongs to the only genus of great apes native to Asia. Its genus name Pongo comes from a Bantu word.

Bornean orangutans build elaborate nests for sleeping with mattresses, pillows, and waterproof roofs. Pillows are apparently the luxury upgrade.

Bornean orangutan has very long arms.

The diet includes over 400 types of food. Wild figs, bird eggs, and honey are all on the menu.

Males develop large cheek pads called flanges made of muscle and fat. They look like built-in armrests.

Wild males weigh an average of 75 kilograms. Captive orangutans can grow considerably overweight beyond normal limits.

About 104,700 individuals remain in the wild. The species is Critically Endangered.
