What the video says
The Geghard monastery is a medieval complex in the Azat River gorge. The main chapel was built in 1215.
Gregory the Illuminator founded the site in the 4th century at a sacred spring inside a cave. The original name was Ayrivank.
Geghard has carved spaces in the surrounding rock massifs.
Some churches are entirely dug out of cliff rocks. Others combine walled sections with rooms deep inside the mountain.
The gavit was built between 1215 and 1225. Four massive free-standing columns support a roof with a central opening for light.
The ceiling uses a stalactite vault derived from Islamic muqarnas. This style appeared in Armenia from the 11th century.
Geghardavank means Monastery of the Spear. It refers to a spear allegedly brought to Armenia by Apostle Jude.
